GoT is Back – And You May Want To Avoid Spoilers
The Game of Thrones franchise has changed the shape of television and allowed networks and streaming services to see the huge potential of blockbuster series. It followed hot on the heels of Netflix’s Mad Men, and helped make big-budget television the norm for viewers. For the last eight years, Game of Thrones has created some of the most memorable characters and then seamlessly killed off these characters in a sequence of events that would have other writers rooms running for the hills.
What started as a series of books touted for the Harry Potter treatment (pipped for a series of films), was picked up by American network HBO for a series run. At first, the premise seemed risky; a high-budget fantasy drama in which main characters were constantly ousted, and nudity and violence were the norm. However, the richness of the story and the ensemble of actors were just the tip of the iceberg for the incredible franchise that has spawned a number of video games. The latest of these spin-offs includes Reigns: Game of Thrones, which has been heralded as a “witty mix of card game, Game of Thrones fan fiction and dating app”. If you’re not quite ready to jump off the deep end into the hardcore fan fiction, Casino Euro host various online slots to play which are based on the franchise.
Game of Thrones brought sex, nudity and violence to our screens and you can bet that everyone from your best friend to your grandma has been hooked on it. As the finale approaches, you might want to take a look back at some of the earlier moments from the show and what may be in store for the multi-million dollar franchise. However, a huge amount of the show’s drama rests on dramatic plot twists and fans have gone to huge lengths to avoid spoilers. Now that the show is in its final season, the drama is ramping up and fans will be doing more than ever to ensure that the drama is a surprise.

Even software that blocks mentions of the show was created early in the series inception by fans who were trying to avoid spoilers. Game of Spoils will block out mentions of the show from popular websites, with the plugin allowing fans to continue surfing the internet without spoiling their favourite show. Some fans have even downloaded apps which will block them from using social media until they have watched the episode. These extreme measures show just how far fans are willing to go to avoid reading unsolicited spoilers for their favourite show.
The show’s stars have even been caught spreading fake spoilers or teasing details to create red herrings and surprise fans. Lena Headey, who plays Catelyn Stark, began trolling fans before the airing of season four, keeping them on their toes about what was to come. Posting pictures on Instagram of spoilers from the books, she convinced readers that they knew what was to come. When the show aired, readers were shocked that Catelyn Stark was not resurrected after the ‘Red Wedding’, and they realised that they had been had by the actor.

With Daenerys on the throne, there is more than one contender for her crown, and whilst there has been major speculation, cast members haven’t even hinted about who it could be. Many think that Jon Snow may return to claim his rightful place. However, there are those who think that this may be too obvious. For now, fans will just have to sit on their hands until the series begins, and perhaps block any mention of the show from their browsers.
