A Q&A with VAYA
“A spirit more than a band…” – introducing the global collaborative of Toronto’s VAYA…
How did you get the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
I can not tell you the name already of the next upcoming album, but the first album is VAYA. VAYA is a synonym of prosperity and peace.
What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Each release has its own challenge. The first one was more «being on time» to get the final product ready for the East Europe Tour. The second is more about: «How will we do all these instruments and vocals with only two of us?»
What do you want the listener to take away from hearing your music?
I wish them a lovely journey… 🙂
How does a track normally come together for the band? Can you tell us a bit about that process?
I receive the music and vocals. Sometimes it is starting with words, sometime with a simple whisper in the street. Then I do the full demo and need some sound engineer (musician for the first album) to finalise the whole thing in studio. Of course, there’s always support in the sense of rhythm from Raphaël Mxt.
How would you say that the sound of your band has changed over the last year?
Through going on experimental wave». Take each «thing» as a possible instrument.
What bands/artists have influenced you the most since you started your own band/project, and why?
Classical music. Psychedelic rock, blues. Charismatic face as Jim Morrison, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Janis Joplin…
When the world is back to normal, where would you really like to tour, and why?
Japan. Because it is a part of this second opus.
If you could only pick one track for our reader to listen to, to get a taster of your music, which one would you go far, and why?
Hard, because from the first to the second album it is a clear evolution. But the vocal print is still there:) I would say, go straight by the first door, go VAYA ( 1st album).
Where do you see your band in five years’ time?
