A Q&A with Kaya Stewart
Swoony R&B-inflected dream pop – here’s Kaya Stewart…
How did you get the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
‘I Hate Falling in Love’ is about all those scary moments and feelings when you are just starting to fall in love with someone. It’s something I feel like everyone goes through, but no one really talks about how it’s not always rainbows and butterflies!
What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Being in quarantine was definitely the hardest part. My favourite part of putting out new music is being able to perform it live, so that has definitely been a challenge.
Who produced the release – what did they bring to it?
The song was actually produced by my boyfriend (Miles Jackson), and my brother (Sam Stewart)! We decided one day to just sit down and write together but didn’t have any expectations. They’re both so talented and the song definitely wouldn’t have the magic it does without them.
What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
When I write, it’s usually about an emotion I’m feeling, or something I experienced, so it’s always interesting to me to see how people perceive my music! These songs helped me through a lot of growing pains, so I hope they can do the same for others.
How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
I can have an idea anywhere! Usually, when I’m in the studio, I’ll hear a track or a guitar loop that inspires me, but sometimes I’ll write a whole song just driving in my car with no music at all! It’s always different.
What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
I’m always super inspired by other musicians, but for this project specifically, I was super inspired by film. 80’s heartbreak and romance movies were constantly on the TV while writing this record. Heathers was definitely a huge inspiration.
When the world is back to normal where would you like to tour, and why?
I always say my favourite thing in the world is touring America, but I’ve never toured Europe! So that statement might change…
If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
‘I Hate Falling in Love’!
What ambitions do you have for your career?
They are always changing. I have so many. But right now, it’s to play live again 🙁
Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
It’s a crazy world out there… stay safe <333
