Unclassifiable Czech rock trio – discover Josef, Tomáš and  Jiří from Corpulent Provocateur…

How did you get the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
The song title ‘Test’ appeared when writing the lyrics. It reflects the meaning of the song. We’ve always been brief about song titles. On the first album, all songs have only one-word titles.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Given that we enjoy and love doing it, we do not take it as hard. But it wasn’t easy at all. We had to work heavily for two months, then get on a plane, fly to London, record a song. Then come back, buy new clothes, take new photos, prepare a graphic visual, write a press release and shoot a music video. Due to the complex processing technology, the preparation of the music video alone took two months. And we already did it three times, since we have released a third single this year.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it?
Producers were Ville Leppanen and Craig Smith. They brought a lot in it. Ville communicated with us two months prior to recording. We’ve sent him some demos and he gave us really valuable advice on how to work with the songs. The biggest improvement was in the shape of the song. Thanks to that, we were able to significantly shorten it and be more straightforward. Recording process was very different from what we were used to. Craig was very thorough. It wasn’t much talking there, it was hard work all the time and we loved it that way. We could immediately see that if you put big effort in it, the result is great.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
That’s the beauty of the music – anybody can take anything from it. But if we have to point at something, hopefully it’ll be energy.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
Someone, mostly a singer, comes up with some idea and we keep jamming till it’s there. These days, when we haven’t seen each other for more than a month, he sends to the others some short demos so they can hear and tell if it’s worth a try, so he can continue working on it. Once a year we also come to this special place called Zoltan Original Bar in Chleny. We close up there for several days and we are working on new stuff. It is a very peaceful place with great owners. Ideal place for composing.

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
We are mostly influenced by 90’ bands. But we all like to listen to different music eras and find new great music, which is still being created nowadays. We don’t think that all music ideas are already spent. On the contrary, there are still opportunities to come up with something new. Or at least we believe it and we also try to do it.

When the world is back to normal where would like to tour, and why?
Anywhere, everywhere. Touring is the main reason and the meaning of why we do it all. Playing concerts for people is the best thing ever, because of the energy in the air during the gig. Better than sex. Seriously

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
It’s hard to say one. There are all our children. You can’t pick one kid and say I like him best.

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
If you want to do something properly, you have to have only the greatest ambition. And that’s what we’re trying to do. So watch out, The Rolling Stones! haha

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
Since people don’t usually throw beers or ashtrays at us during the concert, we say: Thanks!
