Saint Low by Saint Low

Album Review

by Matt Callard

Mary Lorson’s breathy vocals had been the key ingredient in Madder Rose’s fair-to-middling alt-rock success across four occasionally brilliant nineties albums.

saint low album reviewThis debut solo release adds soaring violins, twinkling piano and restrained beats to the mix. But her lovely, lovelorn, laid back voice was the real star.

“One of music’s great lost voices”

The album still managed to disappear without trace, though. Mary Lorson resurfaces occasionally, in different guises or in collaborations – and she’s always worth listening to.

But this album remains a forgotten showcase for one of music’s great lost voices.
