Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010) – Film Review

don't be afraid of the dark katie holmes

Director: Troy Nixey

Certificate: 15

by Dan Berlinka

A young girl who resents having to move in with her Dad and his new wife, finds that the old house they’re renovating is filled with things that go bump in the night

Disappointing chiller that fails to come together despite seeming to have all the right ingredients – a bit like a failed homemade mayonnaise.

“Tap into the fears”

Although this remake of a TV movie is ‘presented’ by Guillermo Del Toro and was apparently a long-time pet project for him, director Troy Nixey doesn’t match Del Toro’s visual flair or ability to tap into the fears of children, while stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes look like they want not so much to get out of the house as out of the movie.

OK for families as kids will probably get something out of it, though it’s really no better than a good episode of Goosebumps.
